Native American Studies: Governance

A guide for a variety of Native American topics.

About

What is governance?

Governance is the action of overseeing the control and direction of something, such as a society, state, or country. Sovereignty is the authority for something to govern itself. There are currently 573 federally recognized tribes. Just as these tribes are considered sovereign nations, so are their governments.

How do tribal governments work?

Today, tribal governments maintain sovereignty to determine and maintain their own governmental structures, laws, and policies. They do this through their own politicians & leaders, elections, police departments, and tribal courts.
