Historically, there have been many attempts by Christian missionaries and church leaders to convert Native Americans to the faith. Some of those attempts have been a dark part of Christian history, such as religious boarding schools. Other attempts have sewn seeds that still have kingdom impacts today.
According to a 2014 study, 66% of Native Americans identify as Christians. Christian churches are on hundreds of reservations. The Bible has been translated into many Native tongues (some are available in the AIC library). There are also a handful of Christian colleges aimed toward Native Americans, such as American Indian College, Lumbee River College, and Indian Bible College. Dr. Randy Woodley and Terry M. Wildman are two well-respected Indigenous Christian authors who have written numerous books about the relationship between Native identity, tradition, and Christian faith. God is doing a work in the lives of Native Americans that will carry on into completion.
