ILL Services

Nelson University students, staff, and faculty may borrow materials from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan for free. You may request books, articles from periodicals, and chapters from books/eBooks. Physical items (like books) typically arrive in four (4) to seven (7) business days; digital items (like articles and chapters form books) typically arrive within two (2) to four (4) business days.

Once you discover a resource that we do not already have in Nelson Memorial Library, and you would like to request it from another library, there are several ways to do so:

  1. In Nelson Discovery, click the "Request Item through Interlibrary Loan" button and enter your information
  2. In (most) Nelson databases, select the "Request Item through Interlibrary Loan" button and enter your information
  3. Email the abstract/bibliographic information directly from a database. Send your request to library@nelson.edu and make sure to include your Lionmail email address in the comment field.
  4. Fill out this form.

We will process the request as quickly as possible and will email you when the item has arrived or if we need more information to process your request.

Distance Education (DE) students living outside of driving range of a Nelson campus are encouraged to work with their local public library to obtain physical books through ILL in order to gain the most time with the borrowed book as possible. DE students can request physical books that Nelson Memorial Library already owns and articles from Nelson Memorial Library or via ILL.

Nelson University does not charge patrons to borrow materials. Borrowers are responsible for overdue charges, as well as replacement costs for lost books.

ILL Turnaround Time

Physical books requested through ILL will generally take anywhere from 4 to 7 business days to arrive; please remember that this is just an estimate. Some books may take longer to come in based on rarity, age, or any other number of factors.

You will receive an email notification when your requested item has arrived and is available for pickup. ILL books not picked up after seven (7) days will be returned to the lending library.

Loan periods, or how long the book may be checked out for, are solely determined by the lending library.

Books should be returned on the due date listed unless an extension/renewal is granted.

Requests for renewals must be made prior to the due date and are granted at the discretion of the lending library.

Due to licensing restrictions, we are unable to borrow eBooks through ILL. We can usually, however, request a chapter from an eBook (for more information, please see the tab called "Article from a journal/Chapter from a book).

Article requests may include articles from a periodical (either online or physical), a chapter from a physical book, or a chapter from an eBook.

Articles generally arrive via email in 2 to 4 business days; please remember that this is just an estimate based on the rarity and age of the article, among other, similar factors.

You will receive an email notification when your requested article or chapter becomes available.

Your article will either be delivered to you either as a PDF email attachment or be available for download from an emailed link. Download links are valid for 30 days or up to 5 uses, whichever comes first; make sure you download articles to your primary device promptly to avoid losing access to them.

Articles do not have to be returned; they are yours to keep.
